Every Child Deserves a name
The primary goal of Cause for Courage is to help people to heal emotionally and
spiritually from an abortion or miscarriage, to help them find freedom from the pain they’ve
encountered as a result of shame and regret. I also want to help change our culture by helping
people find the courage to share their stories with their families and communities. In this day and
age, society has too often welcomed a culture of death. It’s time to change that narrative and
bring the light of truth: that every life has value. Even before we come into the world, the Bible
says, “…even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid” (Luke 12:7).
I want to help people move on productively from the loss of a child. If they can find peace and
forgiveness, then hopefully, in openly sharing their stories, they will persuade others not to go
that route. If they were able to tell their nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, etc.—they, who once chose
death, could become living testimonies. If this book saves the life of one chid, it will have been worth the
eighteen months of toil to write it.
The vision that was given to me is to one day have dedicated memorial plots of land in cemeteries
across the country, like the cemetery in Naples. A circular 180-degree granite wall for the
children’s plaques, an inspiring sculpture in the center, and several benches for quiet prayer or
contemplation. A place to help people achieve closure, name their child, respect their child, and
ultimately live happier, more fulfilled lives, helping those individuals to be released from the
deep regrets, but also never forgetting their son or daughter who was lost.
Someone once challenged this vision, stating that what I wanted to do would require a
lot of money. My response: that’s not my problem. I don’t have
the answers. I just have to put one foot in front of the other and move forward, listening and
following the vision I’ve been given. God will make of it what He wants to make of it. My job
is to trust that all things are possible through Him and not to impose my ego, logic, or limiting
beliefs upon what God wants me to do.
One struggle I had was what to name this non-profit. I thought of naming it Gabriel, but that name
was taken in heaven. After much thoughtful consideration and prayer, I chose Cause for
Courage. I figured that, if anything in life is worth being courageous about, it’s a baby’s
life. The tagline is, “Every Child Deserves a Name.” I knew that this mission God put
in my heart would evoke strong emotions, both supportive and condemning. If nothing else, the name
reminds me to do what I’m reluctant to do. Like Jonah, I’ve found out that it’s
best to follow God’s will for our lives.
